One end plugs into an un-used USB port on the computer and the other end plugs into the power connection on the drive. Optionally, an AC Power Adapter is available from RecoNdata.

Note: Only use the RecoNdata AC Adapter specified for this drive. Do not use a power supply from another RecoNdata drive or another manufacturer. Using any other power cable or power supply may cause damage to the device and void your warranty.

Connecting the Drive to the Computer

Your drive will have one or more of the following ports available for connecting to your computer. Follow the instructions for the port you will use.

Note: You cannot have the drives FireWire and USB interfaces connected at the same time. However, you can use both FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 at the same time.

FireWire 400

" Both ends of the 6-pin FireWire 400 cable are identical. Plug one end into the FireWire 400 port of the drive and the other end into the FireWire 400 port of the computer. Be sure that you insert the cable with the proper orientation. Inserting it incorrectly may damage the drive or computer.

" FireWire 400 devices can be connected via a FireWire 800 port. However, they will operate at FireWire 400 speeds. This will require a 6-pin to 9-pin cable. Do not place the FireWire 400 device between the computer and any FireWire 800 devices. They must be at the end of the FireWire 800 bus.
" Some computers may have a 4-pin FireWire 400 port. While this port may only support connecting cameras, some do support mass storage devices. If your 4-pin port supports mass storage devices you can connect a FireWire drive. It will require a 6-pin to 4-pin cable. Refer to your computer manual if you are unsure if your 4-pin port supports mass storage devices.

Note: Because a 4-pin port is non-powered, you will need to press the blue button to power on the drive. Note: Do not connect FireWire cables so that they form a ring of devices. There is no need for terminators on FireWire devices, so the unused FireWire connectors should be left empty.

2. How do I install a drive on Windows Vista, XP or 2000?

Depending on the model, Datawalker hard drives are formatted Mac Extended (HFS+), Windows FAT32 or Windows NTFS.

" If the drive is formatted NTFS it is ready for use with Windows Vista, XP or 2000.
" If the drive is formatted FAT32 it can be used with Windows Vista, XP or 2000 but we recommend reformatting it NTFS. Keep the drive in the FAT32 format ONLY if you are moving it between a Mac and a PC or you will be connecting to a computer with Windows Me or 98SE.

Note: There is a maximum 4gb file size limit with Fat32.
Note: Not all Datawalker drives are compatible with Windows 98SE or Me. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. If My Computer is not available on the desktop it will be listed under the Start Menu.
2. Locate the Storage Folder, open it if necessary and double click on Disk Management

3. If the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard (Write Signature Wizard in Windows 2000) opens, close it and use the following instructions to initialize.
4. The drive should show in the lower section of the Computer Management window.

o Note: If the Computer Management window does not appear as in these instructions, go to View and set Top to Disk List and Bottom to Graphical View .

5. The Disk information in the left box should either say Unknown or Online .

o If the Disk information in the left box shows as Unknown , right-click in the box and select Initialize Disk . The Disk should now show as Online,

6. The Initialize Disk window will appear. The disk should have a check. Click OK.

o Vista will give you additional choices. Leave MRB (Master Boot Record) selected. You only need to select GPT if you are formatting a 2TB or larger drive.

7. With the Disk showing as Online, right-click on the unallocated space of the disk in the right box and select New Partition ( Create Partition in Windows 2000 and New Simple Volume in Vista).

Note: If the partition has already been formatted right-click and select Format if you wish to reformat the partition.

8. The New Partition Wizard will open. (New Simple Volume Wizard in Vista). Select Next.
9. Select Primary partition for the partition type. Select Next.

10. Specify the partition size. The Partition size in MB should be the same as the Maximum Disk space in MB. Select Next

11. Assign a drive letter or Path. Normally you will use the default Drive letter the Wizard has assigned for the partition. Select Next

12. Format Partition

o File system: Choose NTFS.
o Note: Windows Vista, XP and 2000 are not able to create FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB. You must create multiple 32GB partitions if you use FAT32 format.
o Leave allocation unit size as Default for NTFS.
o Volume label will be the name of the partition in My Computer.
o Select Perform a quick format. If this is not selected, the format process can take a long time.

Note: If quick format does not work successfully you will need to do a full format.

13. Select Next and then Finish. The partition will show as initializing. (If quick format was not selected, this can take quite a while to complete). When completed, the partition will have a drive letter, show as Healthy and NTFS and will be listed in the top section of the Computer Management window.

14. I just received my drive and the size is somewhat smaller than what I ordered

I just received my drive and the size is somewhat smaller than what I ordered.

Many of the vendors of storage products identify their drive models and capacities by using the same model number and capacity as the original manufacturer of the drive mechanism. However, these model numbers only reflect a hard drive's approximate capacity. Vendors may round down to the nearest "gigabyte" multiple, or hundreds of megabytes.

Another reason your drive's actual capacity may differ from its nomenclature is that hard drive manufacturers use a slightly different yardstick of measurement than your computer does:

The hardware industry measures disk capacity as 1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes.
Computers calculate disk drive capacity as 1GB=1,073,741,824 bytes.

If you take your hard drive size and divide it by 1074 (rounding up) you will get the approx. size in Gigabytes available on the computer.

Additionally, some of the hard drive's capacity is used with formatting and driver data. This includes such essentials as the partition map, the desktop files, the drivers, and directory information.

Information on measurements can be found at:http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Gigabyte.

5.
